We are witnessing the rise of a new wave about "China" in academia. The intellectual circles that have joined this new trend come from diverse regions and intellectual backgrounds. Postcolonial studies, anti-Eurocentrism, Sinology, and a new world history studies that has "rediscovered China" in both Asia and the West are all taking part in this new wave. Critical genealogy studies about Chinese modernity in Mainland Chinese academia, the "China school" in various disciplines, the revival of Confucian studies, and even a call to "come back down to earth" from within liberalism are also part of this trend. Although each discipline has its own political and intellectual dynamics and paradigms, one shared focus is relatively clear: instead of treating "China" as a mere object of study under Western gaze, the new wave theorizes "China" through its intellectual, historical, and empirical contexts and explores its potential to become a new intellectual paradigm. As an open intellectual project, "Re-cognizing China" is paradigmatic of the "China turn" in knowledge production today. A return to taking China seriously also means recognizing our past and present, as well as getting to know ourselves in a different light.
