Synopsis
 
Shin Young-Bok(1941-2016) represents the spirit of Korean democratization movement, and has been admired as “the Lu Xun of Korea”. He was imprisoned because of the “Reunification Revolution Party” incident, and has been sentenced to life. After twenty two years, he was released on special parole.
 
Although he was in jail, he viewed the prison as a classroom of “the theory of life” and sociology, and, based on the love of humanity, he laboriously invented a relational theory of “harmony with difference” that can be applied as a mode of thinking of civilizational shift. The letters he wrote to his families was serialized on the Peace Newspaper and published as the Reflections from the Prison before his release. The publication sent a shockwave through Korean cultural scene. And was later adopted as “Shin Young-Bok font” and people’s art, lectures and other publication. He actively participated Korean’s cultural and social scene, and sought to communicate with the mass.
 
This book Discourse is the based on the last semester of lectures that Shin gave at Sungkonghoe University. In this last lecture, Shin Young-Bok brought together economics, philosophy, literature and classic Chinese and Korean philosophy and Western philosophy, and hinted a “relational theory” for the twenty first century.
