Time:2019/04/19(Fri.)2:00-5:00 pm
Venue:Room 106, HA Building 2, NCTU
Speaker:Cindy Patton, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Simon Fraser University

Pierre Bourdieu's later work on the state revised Weber's notion of bureaucracy to consider the dual 'habitus' of the bureaucratic field, that is, the bureaucrat has a double moral duty, first to their specific discipline and second, to act on behalf of the whole.
The two talks position state-sponsored scientists as bureaucrats who on one hand, produce science on behalf of the whole, but also, experience 'moral fatigue' when their research products fail to achieve desired social goals.

*Lecture in English
