Objectives

This course aims to study different forms of border politics and their discursive formation in different historical contexts. This course will be composed of two parts. In the first part, we will focus on the theoretical considerations on the questions of border politics and discursive formation. We select texts from Freud, Lacan, Althusser, Rancière, Agamben, and discuss the fundamental theoretical questions of the partition of We group and Them group, the justification of the count of the part and non-part, the violence of law, state apparatus, and ideology. In the second part, we will focus on the global context of border politics in contemporary societies, particularly the rise of new colonialism, new racism, global logistics, and local infrastructure. We select texts from Foucault, Fanon, Sandro Mezzadra, Brett Neilson, David Harvey, Hanna Arendt, Walter Mignolo, and look into questions of the historical factors and the contemporary geopolitics, such as BRI and its impact on local societies. We will end our discussion on the potential project of decolonization in our time.

This class will incorporate participants’ projects and work on various issues related to the questions on border politics, unequal citizens, discursive formation. We welcome recommendations of examples of documentaries, films, art exhibitions, literature, political debates, citizenship politics, the logistics of Special Economic Zones, migrant workers and refugees. We will try to include cases from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Middle East, and Africa, depending on the need of the participants in this class. The objective of this course is to assist students to think through their problematics and conduct their project.
