Objectives

Bi-lingual Course.

This course aims to explore the question of governmentality through the topological perspective. We will move from Lacan’s topology of the subject to the analysis of the complex system of socio-historical conditions. The symbolic order refers to the normative consensus demanded by the world we live in, including its politico-economic-juridical institutions. The imaginary order refers to the subjective position and the affective regime the subject is situated. The real refers to the contingent and over-determined conjunctures of the historical trajectories, as well as the indefinite aspects of the trajectories.

Our discussion will focus on the evolution of the techniques of governmentality from the colonial era, through the independent modern states in the Cold War, to the globalization of neoliberal capitalism. We will pay particular attention to the topological knot--logistics/infrastructure, subjective perception, the historical conjuncture--in the contexts of governmentality. We will also discuss the possibility of the appearing of the singular non-part in the topological knot. Cases may include artist work, film, theatre, live experience, social movement, etc.

We include the following units:

  • The Topology of Subject and the Regime of the Sensible: Lacan, Kristeva, Rancière
  • The Question of Governmentality: Foucault, Heidegger, Althusser, Rancière, Balibar, etc.
  • The Techniques of Logistics from Colonialism to Neoliberalism: Wallerstein, Schmitt, David Harvey, Brett Neilson, Sandro Mezzadro, etc.
  • The Logic of Separation: Social Inequality, Discrimination, Racism, Unequal Citizenship, Subalterns, Ethnic Minority, Gender Inequality, Sexual Minority
  • The Logical Revolution: Appearing of the Part-of-no-Part

I welcome students to take their projects to participate in this course. The design of the course can be modified according to the participants’ plans. Students are encouraged to take cultural texts such as films, documentaries, literature, arts, historical documents, social media as the interface of their project.

Participants are welcome to discuss with me during the winter break the issues or readings they would like to study.
