Junior, Allen, 483200481 comment: Bellmer, "Doll" This sculpture named "Doll" is apparently presented as a woman image. However, we can find that the woman has got no head. Instead, her head has been replaced by another vigina and breasts. In this sculpture, the woman's function of sex is strongsly stressed. I think Hans Bellmer does this to remind us the unfair position and stereotypes of women. Women have long been descrimenated as the lower position, and cannot have their own thinkings. Besides, this woman's legs are cut. This is also another symbol to show that women's freedom, not only on thinking but also on action, is limited. name: Doll1表現了前衛藝術的諷刺性. name: June 483200704 comment: Bellmer, "Doll" Junior, June 483200704 April 27, 1997 From this sculpture, it's obvious that Bellmer is presenting the position of women in the society-- they are humans, being a woman we believe that we are more than a delication or either an object for the used of opposite sex. Yet, in many instances, this sculpture presents the degraded position of female in the society; it's entire sensitive parts are shown to the world, without any covering. Yet, because shame overpowered the nature of human beings, the sculptor took off it's head, arms and legs, which were supposed to be the parts where female can present their capability aside from arousing the sexual desire of another kind of mankind. name: Patrick Chen 483200170 , Junior comment: Bellmer, "Doll" comment: Because of the position of the organs on this statue, we can realize that Hans Bellmer seemed to present female image as sort of ugly things. Certainly, the idea of this work is also very apparent to us. That may refer to the old viewpoint toward female which just treat womne like something characterized with the breasts and private part. In this work, we cannot see the person's limbs at all. Therefore, I think it is also referring to that most people would think women are not so capable. A deformed body with some exaggerated chartcteristics could make us more aware of the unfair situation upon female. 97/4/20 name: English Dept. What we can see are sexual organs of a woman. Furthermore, we can there are double pudendums and breasts. It gives me the idea that what men concern more about women are there sexual organs. name: Senior, Jean Ding, 482200812 comment: Bellmer, "Doll" March 24, 1997 It seems to me that there are actually two female bodies with one abdomen. And the female sexual characteristics are shown both in the upper and lower parts. It seems to imply that women are just the object of sexual intercourse, no matter whether they are intelligent or beautiful. Their heads are not important, but their female characteristics are the actual object and function which men are looking for. So the woman, the doll's head is replaced and repeated by her breasts and pudendum.
