The painting presents a woman and a young girl, and the composition itself shows the close relationship of the two. The connect-i on of their eyesight and their gestures show mutual caring and trust, althought we do not really see thier eyes, it can be imply by the direction their heads turn. The woman's tall image imply her protective position and her power and ability of nursery and protection. The tall woman might be the goddess of night, and the little girl could be Carrington herself or her projection of all the women who were oppressed or confined in the daylight, which symolized the paternal society, and were seeking comfort from the maternal night.
