In the painting we see the figures which symbolized the sign of time are changed. The shape of those clocks softened, transformed, and even somewhat liquid-like. Does the painter, according to the title, suggests that human beings would somehow change or even distort the fact as to keep in their mind forever? Some sayings show that people apt to remember certain events as the way they like. Its dry-land background leads me to feel "this is long long time ago," so there is no leaves, water, and flowers. Does it imply that our fading memory? With the pass of time, we can just remeber the major parts of the past(the dry brahch and hard stage), but forget most of it. Time is still time; however, it is twisted,and not so sure for us. I think it is why the clocks are flabbily lying there. The relation between time and memory is not so stable. Usually, we cannot match the right time with the right incident. I think Dali has the sense of humor which we common people don't have. Watching this painting, I will feel the senese of isolation and lonliness. Though the human beings claim that " time " is the most important thing in the world, we can't control time. Here the clock and watch are so soft and weak that we can't catch it. It seems that " time " is tired to death. Besides, the background of this painting is also very barren. If " time " really exist in this world, then I will think that the world is few of hope and sunshine. Though the title of this painting is " The Persistence of Memory ", I didn't think anything about memory about " memory " when I first watched this painting. For me, this painting reperesents the world which is hopeless and despairing. We value time, but what can we do if "time " itself is so soft without any strength to stand up. name: 英文三 許巧瑛 483200467 comment: Dali, "The Persistence of Memory" March 8th 1997 這幅畫給我的感覺是非常荒涼.為什麼以扭曲的鐘錶 來代表時間這抽象的意念呢? 是不是因為時間是不斷 的流動,所以畫家才以扭曲的鐘錶象徵時間? 畫家將這 個扭曲的鐘錶掛在枯枝,方行體,及一個有人眼睫毛的 物品上, 是不是就連結了時間與記憶這兩個抽象概念? 但這兩個意念應該不是靜止不動的,為什麼畫家要給 人如此沉寂荒涼之感呢?
