超現實主義在二十世紀現代繪畫中的表現風格--不成形狀的人形
Max Ernst, "Barbarians", 1937
「野蠻人」("Barbarians")這幅畫中, 恩斯特不再賦予人們真人的形體, 而以禽獸取代。

It makes me think about the giant enemies in cartoons. Strange looking creatures who wanted to invade earth, cruel and powerful. It is very interesting that the colors the painter should choose. One barbarian is in red and the other is in green. They seem to be in contrast though, or maybe it's due to my own opinion toward colors. Those two barbarians might be on the same side, or maybe they are fighting with each other. name: Junior/Karen Huang/483200376 comment: Ernst, "Barbarians" 3/24/1997 I believe the reason why Ernst wants to twist human figures into animals is because he thinks that humans are like animals. Humans know how to hide their real feelings and cover their evil thoughts. However, if we try to unmask, we are just as cruel and ugly as animals. In other words, those animal figures represent our real nature and sometimes we are just the uncivilized barbarians. name: Senior, Jean Ding, 482200812 comment: Ernst, "Barbarians" March 24, 1997 Human beings are described as the mixture of various kinds of animals. Does it imply that human beings are not only worse than animals, but also combining all the malicious elements of animals? It seems to me that Max Ernst is trying to reveal human beings' inner, malicious aspects through the appearance of these ugly monsters. For him, human beings are barbarians who are still not modernized and improved yet, just like animals. name: Abby Hsiao 483200716 English Junior comment: Ernst, "Barbarians" March 14,1997 When human beings are driven by their desire and try to obtain and posses everything they long for, they are like beasts that only look for satisfying their appetite. And sometimes humams are even more inhuman than animals and destroy everything that obstructs them to fulfill their ambition. name: English Dept.
