馬格利特更時常以 嘲諷的方式 批判人類 嗜戰的習性。 他曾說： 「我們是這個 荒謬無序的 世界的主人， 我們製造武器 來預防戰爭， 我們發明科學來毀滅、 殺戮、 建造、 延長 將死之人 的生命， 我們以各種 瘋狂的行為來 阻止其他人的 瘋狂行為。」(Magritte in 1938)
在 「自由的門檻」 ("On the Threshold of Freedom") 這幅畫中， 馬格利特 以透視法 呈現一個 室內空間， 三面豎立的牆上，拼貼馬格利特 其他畫作中的意象， 如半身裸女、 樹林、 公寓的窗戶、 木板牆面、 藍天白雲、 火焰等。 打破這個 由三面二度空間 的平面 圍繞封閉的 強制性 視覺經驗，是一尊 立體大砲， 以斜角的位置站立，砲口朝向畫有 藍天白雲的 「出口」。
在此靜止的空間中， 在此自由的門檻， 似乎 戰爭 與 暴力 在下一刻 便會發生， 打破此刻 不自然的 和平假相。

The blue sky and the pure-white clouds make me feel free and easy. However, the cannon which seems to set off right away gives me the feelings of violence and sin. The painting reminds me a Chinese proverb "居安思危." The naked woman, the forest, the fire, and the windows seem not to belong to this place. However, they are framed here and seem unable to move away even the entrance is not far away. If they move, they are going to be shoot by cannon. So,what the images present here are quite contrast to the title.
