Both Taiwan and Korea, within the East Asian cultural sphere, were former Japanese colonies. Although colonialism is generally considered a relic of the past, the colonial legacy remains active forces shaping the political, social and economic landscapes of the two countries. As for Japan, it not only shares familiarity with the Chinese classics and Confucian values, but also acquires Western knowledge and modern techniques well ahead of its neighbors. The empire of Japan established itself as one of the superpowers via rapid modernization and westernization, and swiftly reached the height of the imperialist power following the victories of the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War. Over the course of time, Japanese thoughts and education therefore demonstrate a unique blend of eastern and western cultures. This raises crucial questions: how did the empire form its thoughts on many different levels and extend its knowledge in every field? How were Taiwan and Korea understood regarding politics and social studies within the intellectual framework of imperial Japan? What was the connection between the colonizer and the colonized in terms of knowledge structure? What groups of people were involved in constant movements between the motherland and the colonies over time, and how were societies impacted by geography, politics, and the economy overall? This conference therefore aims at developing a deeper understanding of the connection between Japan, Taiwan and Korea within the scope of intellectual history and the history of literature. It also examines the impact of relationships between ideas and people across time and place, helping to discover how the communication between the colonizer and the colonized influence traditions, ideas, and values. Subtopics are as follows: (1) the knowledge of imperial Japan and Taiwan, (1.1) intellectual history, (2) the knowledge of imperial Japan and Taiwan, (2.1) history and literature, (3) the knowledge of imperial Japan and Korea.
