｜Synopsis｜
This conference is a series of three related forums. Subaltern studies and postcolonial theory
share mutual thematic terrains, are catalyzed by various sources of sociopolitical critique and
have clear relevance to local cultural dynamics in Asia and its ongoing globalization but as
intellectual debate have evolved in diverse contexts of time and place. The first panel, entitled
On Critical Subalternism, explores the interchangeability of subaltern and postcolonial concepts
as rooted inherently in specific modes of authorial subjectivity. A second forum, on Coloniality
as Episteme, will examine more explicitly the practice of cultural critique. The third forum will
focus more narrowly on the colonial state as a fulcrum of power. This series should hopefully
provide a more comprehensive framework for reassessing the history of area studies and in turn
develop a more sophisticated system for articulating politics, society and culture as process.
