Objectives:
This
course is designed to investigate the discursive mode of modernity
in early 20th century China and Taiwan. We’ll divide the course
into three parts: first, we''ll read theoretical texts on the
phenomena of cultural translation or transmission, as well as
significant texts on Chinese and Taiwanese modernity; second,
we'll discuss selective representative cases, both contemporary
ones and texts from early 20th century, such as literature, cinema,
avant-garde art, popular magazines, cartoon, and so on, and trace
the historical context of the dominant discourses, such as the
concept of organism, progressive historicism, revolution, and
decadence.
Pre-requisite
for foreign students: English and Chinese reading competence.
