Research Futures: The Victimisation of Asylum Seeker Children

2022-12-05 - 2022-12-07

December 7th, 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Online

In this instalment of the Research Futures webinar series, Democratic Citizenship Theme Director and Professor of International Law Leïla Choukroune talks hosts alongside Sarah Atkins, Senior Lecturer in Portsmouth Law School.

Child asylum seekers (especially unaccompanied minors) are more vulnerable than adults. They require extra protections and safeguarding beyond what the State provides for adult asylum seekers. All children in the care of the State should be placed in age-appropriate and safe accommodation with staff who are properly trained; Child asylum seekers are no different.

In this talk, Sarah will interrogate current Home Office practices as well as the recent reports of attacks towards asylum-seeking children. In doing so, she aims to cast light on the UK government's breaching of human rights obligations while highlighting how their current policies are complicit in endangering the lives of child asylum seekers.
