CFP: Global Humanities Institute 2019 - Crises of Democracy through the Prism of Cultural Trauma July 15-24, 2019 Dubrovnik, Croatia

2019-07-15 - 2019-07-24

The CHCI-Mellon Global Humanities Institute on "Crises of Democracy through the Prism of Cultural Trauma" is a partnership formed by five universities: Trinity College Dublin, University of São Paulo, Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Zagreb, and Columbia, Society of Fellows and Heyman Center for the Humanities. The primary focus of the Global Humanities Institute is exploring crises of democracy through the lens of cultural trauma.

As part of this Global Humanities Institute on Crises of Democracy, we are organizing a 9 day intensive summer school. We invite applications from graduate students and early career researchers from a range of disciplines, including but not limited to anthropology, cultural studies, gender studies, history, journalism, law, languages, literatures, psychology, political science, peace studies, film, audio-visual arts, theatre studies, and the creative and performing arts who are working in the area of crises of democracy and cultural trauma to apply for this international, cross-disciplinary summer school. Faculty and participants of the summer school will explore perspectives, approaches, frameworks, and frames of reference on the topic of “Crises of Democracy.” Please note that applicants must be currently affiliated with a CHCI member-organization or a university hosting a CHCI member-organization (see CHCI directory).

The summer school will be delivered through a range of seminars, discussions, participant presentations, workshops, film and performance viewings, and site visits. The school will also be documented through the form of a documentary film and blog. Participants will present a paper at the summer school which will be pre-circulated to faculty and fellow participants prior to arrival.

Participants will be funded on the condition that they fully participate. They will be expected to engage and contribute to every aspect of the summer school and will be resident at the summer school for the entire period. Through this summer school, we are hoping to inspire a network of researchers in the area of crises of democracy and cultural trauma to continue to support and work with one another after the summer school has ended. The working language for the summer school and all activities will be English.

We accept applications from advanced PhD students who are in the final stages of writing and early career researchers who received their PhD after September 2013. We are committed to assembling a diverse and inclusive academic community. Toward this end, we especially encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups and those whose interests contribute to realizing this goal.

If you would like to apply for the GHI summer school, please complete and submit the form below by October 8, 2018.

We hope to notify successful applicants by the start of December. Participant’s travel, accommodation, and main meals will be covered for the residency on the condition that they fully participate. Travel must be booked and paid for by each participant and will be reimbursed (up to an agreed limit) upon completion of the residency. If you do not have access to funds that will allow this arrangement, we can arrange alternative methods for booking travel.

Access and support requirements: The venue for the summer school is located in the old town of Dubrovnik and is located at the top of a hill. There is access to the venue by way of a ramp but other activities, such as field trips and field work in the old town, may require modifications to be made for those with mobility difficulties. If you have any access or support requirements please let us know as soon as possible so that we can do our best to facilitate your needs.
