CEFC Taipei talk: Sino-globalization: opportunities and pitfalls of universalism with Chinese characteristics

2019-05-31

Title: Sino-globalization: opportunities and pitfalls of universalism with Chinese characteristics
Time: May 31, 2019 14:30 - 16:30
Venue: Room B202, Research Center for Humanities and Social sciences,  Academia Sinica

Abstract:
Most of the books related to China’s influence on the world scene tend to apprehend the PRC either as a specific cultural entity unaltered by the modern world or as a Nation-State among others. This book explores another option: the political leadership in Beijing is both the heir of a prestigious ancient civilization that it wishes to restore through “the great rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation” and the head of a modern Nation-State, the “New China” that rose in 1949 and pretended to make a clean sweep of the past. The exploration of this tension - some might even call it contradiction - gives the key to understand the behavior of China on multiple fronts, apparently unrelated to each other: its diplomatic policy, its use of statistics, civil-military relations, its conception of soft power, its grand project of rating citizens, the Belt and Road Initiative, etc. Beyond the propaganda discourse to legitimize its ambitions as the world greatest power, Beijing reveals what kind of leader it is and what kind of future we are promised to if universalism with Chinese characteristics expands.

Speaker:
Emmanuel Dubois de Prisque is a research fellow, in charge of East Asia at the Thomas More Institute in Paris. He is also co-editor (with Jean-Yves Heurtebise) of the French quarterly magazine Monde Chinois, nouvelle Asie. Between 2014 and 2016, he was based in Taipei, at the Institute of International Relations of National Chengchi University. His book (in French) on sino-globilization (written with Sophie Boisseau du Rocher) has been published in Paris in January 2019 (Editions Odile Jacob).

The event will be chaired by Sébastien Billioud (CEFC Taipei).
The talk will be given in English.
Attendance is free but registration is necessary.
