📌Background notes of the discussion
"Chip diplomacy" involves leveraging semiconductor technology and supply chain collaborations to forge alliances and exert influence in global politics. Semiconductors, which has become the backbone of modern industries ranging from smartphones to defense systems, have become vital geopolitical resources. Taiwan, a leader in semiconductor production, and India, a burgeoning tech center, are discovering new areas of collaboration through strategic technology partnerships. For India, enhancing ties with Taiwan, particularly in the realm of chip diplomacy, could lessen its reliance on Chinese technology and provide a chance to diversify investors and manufacturers, thereby bolstering domestic electronic production. For Taiwan, India presents a vast market, political goodwill, and a strategic alternative to dependence on traditional partners. However, both nations must navigate this partnership through various obstacles, including bureaucratic hurdles, infrastructure deficiencies, and India's commitment to the one-China policy.
In this context, this discussion invites experts from Taiwan and India to reflect on Taiwan-India bilateral relations, focusing on how global competition and the strategic significance of semiconductor chips are redefining their relationship beyond traditional factors like trade, culture, and education. The discussion will also address the challenges that both sides must overcome and the implications of this new dynamic in the broader geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific region.
