Targeting mainly at Taiwan New Literature in Japanese Colonial Period, the Dictionary covers also folk literature, drama, pop songs, etc. In terms of four major categories, writers, works, media, and ideological trends and movements, the Dictionary reveals the literary movements in Taiwan and the publication, publishing, reproduction, translation of Taiwan writers in Japan, China, and “Manchuria.” On the basis of Dictionary of Colonial Literature in East Asia: Taiwan, it takes several years and 128 scholars’ contributions to complete the total of 411 entries, more than 280,000 words of translation, 206 pictures, and 18,000 captions. This is a reference book as well the entrance to the professional knowledge of Taiwan literature. The Dictionary not only reflects the accumulated academic results of Taiwan literature for over 30 years but also represents the breakthrough of the discipline’s comparison and connection in issues regarding East Asia. The compilation of the Dictionary meets different purposes, including basic introduction for foreigners and common readers and advanced studies for experts in Taiwan and abroad. It contains new entries, new writers, new interpretations, new discoveries, and new studies in consistent styles. We especially emphasize cross-border/cross-language/inter-ethnic literary interchange and cultural intertextuality. We genuinely hope that this Dictionary can benefit the interchange of modern literature in East Asia and the reflection of colonialism.
