On January 13th-14th, 2021, In alliance with the CHCI-GHI, funded by the Mellon Foundation and the Ministry of Education (ROC, Taiwan), the International Center for Cultural Studies (ICCS) National Chiao Tung University organized the webinar “Interventions from the South: Theoretical Perspectives and Pragmatic Issues of Migration, Logistics and Unequal Citizens in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic”.

This webinar is an integrative platform where distinguished scholars of the CHCI-GLOBAL HUMANITIES INSTITUTE 2020-2021 and Asia-based migrant rights activists and NGOs present their research and professional observations of the complexities of migrant issues in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The webinar will not only address the unequal and xenophobic treatment of migrant communities during the pandemic but also unfolded NGOs’ experiences in working with migrant communities to fight for their fundamental human rights. With the dual theoretical-pragmatic approach, this webinar aimed to elicit fruitful dialogue and interventions that will enhance the rights and welfare of migrants in Asia.

We have invited 12 South Asia, South East Asia and East Asia NGOs representatives to be the webinar speakers. They have shared their insight on the following 4 themes: :(1) Precarious Conditions and the Legality/Illegality Divide of Migrant Workers; (2) Multidirectional Unequal Care and Unequal Rights; (3) Lawless Ocean: Fishermen at Sea; and (4) Transnational Care during the Pandemic. During the webinar, not only the speakers and participants have a lively discussion regarding the migrant communities experience within different contexts, but the dialogues between the migrant rights NGOs and migration scholars may fostering each other understanding of Asia based migration knowledge and advance such studies.
