moreThe Tibetan Diaspora in Taiwan: A Visual Ethnography of Migration and Settlement
Principle Investigator:Cheng-Shin Yang
The proposed documentary project focuses on the oral histories, visual documentation, and archival preservation of early exiled Tibetans in Taiwan, exploring their daily lives, employment, religious practices, and social relations. It aims to examine how the Republic of China government (in Taiwan) addressed and managed the arrival of refugees as both political and economic migrants. Furthermore, it examines how these Tibetan migrants—arriving through both legal and undocumented channels—accumulated social and economic capital to secure legal status or establish deep-rooted lives within Taiwanese society.
