Long Time No Sea

In Migrant Worker Film Festival, we are screening a film related to Taiwanese experience of labour migration. Long Time No Sea tells a story about a young boy in Lanyu (Orchid Island). Since he was young, his father left to Kaohsiung to work. The burden of taking care of him is on his grandmother’s shoulders. Some of the scenes in Long Time No Sea, such as the young boy writing a letter to tell his father his shoe size, eagerly waiting for his father to bring back a new pair of trainers, and the Austronesian elements in the film, highly resonates to the experience of Southeast Asian blue-collar migrant workers in Taiwan.
Long Time No Sea especially uses the perspective of an elementary school child to narrate the story. It is a film suitable for elementary school and high school students. The film’s message can influence their heart and mind. Since the leading male actor has won Golden Horse Awards, more people are interested in watching the film.
