Political Transition in Myanmar and the Conflict in Rakhine State Interlinked?

2019-12-18 - 2019-12-19

Dr. Kristina Kironska

Date: 2019 December 18 WED
Time: 14:00-17:00
Venue: NCTU HA Building 2 R106A

In this lecture, you will learn about ethnic groups in Asia that are stateless and what that means for them in their daily life. The main focus will, however, be on the Rohingya who have since 2012 left Myanmar's Rakhine State en masse. Who are they and why did they have to flee? How is the conflict in Rakhine State connected to the recent transition process in Myanmar?

Kristina Kironska was born in Slovakia to a multilingual family. She studied International Relations in Slovakia, Portugal and Taiwan. In 2015-2016 she lived in Myanmar, where she worked for a local NGO and conducted research on the 2015 elections and the political transition of the country. She also studied the issue of the persecuted minority Rohingya. In 2017-2018 she worked for Amnesty International as a campaigner. Currently, she lives in Taipei where she conducts research on Taiwan-Myanmar relations. She is also a Research Fellow at the Central European Institute of Asian Studies and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Taipei. She published several articles and books about political transition and the electoral system in Myanmar, migration in Asia, and CEE-China relations. She can be reached at k.kironska@gmail.com
