Abstract:

For 4 years, the HumAnimaLab has been working in the Gatineau Park, a conservation area located on the edge of the Canadian capital, Ottawa. In this park lays an old mine, abandoned and flooded, once dug with pickaxes on unceeded indigenous territory. A mine that embodied the extractivist program of a then-young country. Following ancient crumbling tunnels now filled with an intriguing mix of rain and ground water, a team of technical divers carried out several deepwater samplings while breaking a world record of cold-water diving at 600 feet. These valued samples were then analyzed by a Montrealbased team of microbiologists, who detected new and promising forms of life. Since 2019, we have been documenting this long and perilous process of extraction / revelation in order to produce an ethnography particularly attentive to processes of (in)visibilizations - of the flooded depths to be mapped out, of their microorganisms habitants to be ‘discovered’, but also of forgotten miners to be remembered. By concentrating on the holographic activities that allow the emergence of new forms of life (at the same time as the disappearing of old ones), we explore some avenues to undermine this now infamous anthropo(s)cene.
