In his upcoming presentation, Vincent Delbos-Klein will explore the institutional and operational frameworks of French cinema, initiating with an overview of the institutional context and delineating the unique characteristics of its model in terms of both norms and exceptions. His analysis extends into the transformation triggered by the mass adoption of digital tools in the early 2000s, which not only altered access to cinematic practice but also undermined French social law by institutionalizing "hope-labor" practices.
Delbos-Klein will share insights from his recent fieldwork involving filmmakers in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, shedding light on regional cinematic practices and their implications.
The latter portion of his talk will pivot to his contributions to visual sociology, particularly film sociology. He will introduce ongoing projects that bridge research and creative expression: "Quantique Khan," a study tracking a DIY musician and quantum physics researcher touring between France and Japan; "Retour aux sources," which examines a network of water activists operating between India and France; and "Once There Was," an animated documentary series chronicling ecological disasters globally.
This presentation aims to dissect the epistemological challenges posed by visual elements in research and the dynamic interplay between research and creative processes, highlighting innovative approaches in sociological inquiry.
