Reconsidering Heritage, Memory and the Postcolonial Museum

2019-04-22

Topic : Reconsidering Heritage, Memory and the Postcolonial Museum
Time : 2019/4/22,14:30-16:30
Venue : Room C203, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, National Tsing Hua University
Speaker:Dr. Michael Rowlands
*English speech

This talk will focus on the relationship between different academic debates concerning memory studies, critical heritage and the post-colonial museum. It will outline their differences and suggest they all share a concern with fears of loss of identity and a responsibility to remember. While exploring the relationship between the ideas of collective memory and building identities, we can discuss the reasons why a focus on commemoration and duty to remember motivates many authorised heritage discourses, but we can also consider how counter memory generates resistance to authorised remembering and the collective sense of identity. The rising importance of heritage as a national discourse is met often with alternative narratives generated through the means of exhibition and display. The case of the Vietnam National Museum of History will be cited during the presentation.
