How can art confront urgent social challenges, participate in collective action, and generate critical as well as imaginative responses to the crises of our time? How can artistic practices engage with questions of conflict, justice, decolonisation, and the unequal conditions produced by contemporary global transformations? How might art illuminate the social, political, and affective tensions shaping twenty-first-century Asia, while opening new spaces for dialogue, solidarity, and alternative futures? In what ways can artistic intervention engage with the lived realities of migrant workers, refugees, stateless persons, and other marginalised and vulnerable communities whose voices are often excluded from dominant narratives?
The Center emphasises the responsibility of universities to respond to social issues and to foster sustained dialogue between academia and society. Through this research cluster, we collaborate with local NGOs, art activists, human rights organisations, and the graduate student-led online publishing collective CJD. In conjunction with the Center’s broader research initiative on “Conflict, Justice, and Decolonisation,” the cluster seeks to connect critical research with forms of social engagement that address the conditions faced by those at the margins of society.
This research cluster focuses on forced migration, statelessness, refugees, migrant labour, vulnerable populations, and marginalised communities. Members are encouraged to develop artistic intervention and social action through diverse forms of knowledge production, including film screenings, curatorial projects, documentary filmmaking, video essays, digital publications, independent zines, exhibitions, and public forums. By integrating artistic practice, critical inquiry, and community engagement, the cluster aims to expand public understanding of these issues, strengthen civic dialogue, and contribute to the creation of a more inclusive, equitable, and socially supportive society.
