「後/冷戰文化影子下之亞際知識解殖」系列演講

1. 演講:Understanding Taiwan-Southeast Asia Relations during the Cold War

日期:2018.12th. Dec. (Wed.) 16:00-18:00
地點:NCTU, HA2 Building, Room 106A

講座摘要:
A large part of Cold War Studies in East and Southeast Asia have focussed almost exclusively on the threat of China and Chinese communism, the role played by China, the Soviet Union and the United States in the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, and how Taiwan was maintained as a bastion against mainland China. A significant part that is missing in this picture is the role the Republic of China (Taiwan) played in promoting anti-communism through cultural diplomacy. This presentation will discuss the role of cultural diplomacy in cultivating relations between Taiwan and Southeast Asia by examining some of the government files held in Taiwan.

2. Topic:Singapore and the Republic of China (Taiwan), 1959-1990

日期:2018.13th. Dec. (Thur.) 13:30-16:30
地點:NCTU, HA2 Building, Room 106A

講座摘要:
This presentation is part of my study on Taiwan-Southeast Asia relations during the Cold War. The Republic of China (Taiwan) had been monitoring the decolonisation process in Southeast Asia. When Singapore became a self-governing British colony in 1959, Taipei was still keen on maintaining links with overseas Chinese leaders sympathetic to the Kuomintang. After Singapore left Malaysia to be an independent republic in 1965, the Republic of China was one of the first countries to recognise the city-state’s independence and, despite the lack of official relations, played a part in the early economic development of Singapore. This presentation looks at the assistance Taipei had given to Singapore and the impact of cultural links – such as movies and music from Taiwan – on Singapore.
